Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Biographical films, or biopics, have gained prominence as educational tools that narrate the lives of notable individuals, highlighting their challenges, triumphs, and leadership styles. These films serve as powerful vehicles for imparting leadership values, particularly in regions like Jibia Local Government Area, Katsina State, where leadership development among youths is critical (Abubakar & Hassan, 2023). Biopics provide real-life examples of resilience, innovation, and ethical decision-making, inspiring viewers to emulate positive leadership traits (Ibrahim, 2024). With increasing access to media platforms, biographical films have become more accessible, making them effective tools for both formal and informal education (Usman & Ahmed, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of biographical films that showcase exemplary leadership, the extent to which these films influence viewers in Jibia remains unclear. There is limited research on how biopics contribute to fostering leadership values, particularly among youths in this region. This study addresses the gap by examining the effectiveness of biographical films as tools for teaching leadership values (Mohammed, 2024).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the leadership values depicted in biographical films popular in Jibia.
  2. To evaluate the influence of these films on viewers’ perceptions of leadership.
  3. To identify challenges in using biographical films as educational tools in the area.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What leadership values are commonly portrayed in biographical films viewed in Jibia?
  2. How do these films influence viewers’ understanding of leadership?
  3. What challenges affect the use of biopics for leadership education in Jibia?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Biographical films significantly influence viewers’ perceptions of leadership in Jibia.
  2. Positive portrayals of leadership in biopics inspire desirable traits in viewers.
  3. Cultural and educational barriers limit the effectiveness of biographical films in fostering leadership values.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study underscores the role of biographical films in leadership development, offering insights for educators, filmmakers, and policymakers on integrating these films into leadership training programs.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the effectiveness of biographical films in teaching leadership values in Jibia Local Government Area, Katsina State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Biographical Films: Films that dramatize the life story of a real person.
  • Leadership Values: Principles and behaviors associated with effective and ethical leadership.
  • Jibia: A local government area in Katsina State, Nigeria.
